Whether these adolescents listen to their parents on the topic of alcohol use is statistically related to the parenting practices of their parents. Specifically, authoritative parents, those who provide a healthy and consistent balance of discipline and support, are the most likely to have adolescents who respect established boundaries regarding drinking and other behaviors, while adolescents exposed to more permissive, authoritarian, or neglectful parents are less influenced by their parents' views on drinking.5
