Cuando los glaciares de Ayacucho (Perú) empezaron a desaparecer, la intensa escasez de agua hizo insostenible la vida en la región. Hasta que dos hermanas revivieron la antigua práctica de construir depósitos de agua sagrados en las montañas.
Martina: Marcela se dirigía a una laguna sagrada construida por el hombre. Allí celebraría una ceremonia indígena para honrar al agua. Debido al cambio climático y al desarrollo urbano, la comunidad de Marcela había perdido su principal fuente de agua. Por eso, las lagunas se habían vuelto muy preciadas.
Martina: Cuando llegaron a la cima de la montaña, Marcela se maravilló ante el agua cristalina. Frente a ella había una laguna construida con antiguos métodos indígenas. Forma parte de una red de embalses, o reservas, que funcionan como almacenamiento masivo de agua para una comunidad de más de 200.000 personas.
Marcela: Los pájaros vuelan sobre la laguna, ¡es un espectáculo hermoso! En las aguas también hay peces. Ahora todos saben que las lagunas son importantes para recuperar el agua en nuestra comunidad, pero no siempre ha sido así. Construir esas lagunas no fue fácil.

Martina: It was a hot night in February 2019 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when nineteen-year-old Nicole Becker was sitting at home, bored. Like many young people, she grabbed her phone and started watching videos on Instagram.
Nicole: I was following an account called "Hope! Videos for Change," and all of a sudden I saw a video that really caught my attention. There was a European girl, younger than me, calling for a global march for climate change. I didn't know who she was and I didn't really understand what climate change was, but I kept watching the video because I wanted to know more.
Nicole: I said, "Unbelievable! So many young people are mobilizing for something important, and in my city I don't hear anything about it." I've always been concerned about human rights, and the climate crisis is a human rights issue. I knew I had to do something.
And listeners, a quick note about the Spanish you'll hear in this episode. In Argentina, often the LL and Y are pronounced with a "sh" sound, as in "SHamadas." Also, the S is often aspirated in the Argentinian accent. That means you'll hear an "h" sound rather than the typical "s" sound, like "eHcuela."
