Microbiota refers to the set of microorganisms living in a specific environment. The genome of all organisms comprising the gut flora contains 150 times more genes than the human genome [7]. All of these genes have a beneficial impact on host health with effects on immune system homeostasis, production of essential nutrients for the organism, and protection against pathogenic microorganisms [8].

The human gastrointestinal tract harbors a microbiota of more than 10 14 anaerobic bacteria, yeasts, fungi and viruses [9]. This system is sterile during gestation and colonizes after birth. Colonization of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract depends on several factors, including the type of delivery and the method of postnatal feeding [10,11]. Subsequently, the intestinal microbiota is transferred from mother to child and its composition could be affected over time through various environmental factors, such as diet, antibiotic use, and environmental exposure to microorganisms, thus potentiating the risk of bacterial imbalance. This condition is also known as gut dysbiosis and is characterized by a shift from a healthy gut flora to one detrimental to host health, which can negatively influence the functioning of the central nervous system through several intertwined pathways that together form the 'gut-brain axis' (Figure) [12].
